There is no limit to Texans’ love for good BBQ. To that end, a new BBQ-focused bar and grill is set to open in Highland Park in early 2022. A tagline for the restaurant says it will offer “smoke, steak, and spirits”.

Douglas is the latest dining experience from pit master Doug Pickering. He is also the founder of DWP BBQ, a catering and barbeque school in Dallas. Previously the head trader for a Dallas-based hedge fund, Pickering left his finance career in 2013 to pursue a passion for cooking great food, an experience that included him serving as pitmaster for WORK Bar and Grill and NL Group. He was also executive chef and owner of Ferris Wheelers Backyard and BBQ before branching off to launch his own venture.

According to an official statement, Douglas will marry traditional BBQ staples and celebrated southern cooking in a sophisticated, family-friendly experience.

Escape Hatch Dallas writes that the lunch-and-dinner restaurant will focus on smoked meats such as prime brisket, ribs, and sausage at lunch. For dinner, the menu will expand beyond BBQ to include such eats as honey glazed smoked salmon, fried quail and pork shoulder steaks. Guests will be able to choose from a variety of delicious sides including beer-battered fried okra, green chile mac ‘n’ cheese, and pit beans. Salads and a dessert offering of fresh pies will also be on the menu.

Douglas will open in Snider Plaza, a University Park shopping mall that has been around since 1927, and features a multitude of retailers and restaurants. Banditos Tex Mex Cantina, Craig Lawrence Jewelry, Kuby’s Sausage House, Starbucks and Zoe’s Kitchen are just a few of the businesses that call the Plaza home.

Construction on the 2,500-square feet restaurant started in September and will be able to seat 95 guests. Curbside pickup and catering will also be available. An official rendering suggests the space will also include a patio, but that has not been confirmed.
