Ice + custard = equals happiness. Who can argue with this equation?

Rita’s Italian Ice of Bedford is moving for expansion purposes. There’s no need for alarm, however, if you’re a frequent guest of the longtime ice cream and frozen custard shop. The move isn’t far and the new location will be open and operating right before the sweltering dog days of summer hit Texas in full force.

Rita’s has been at 501 N Industrial Blvd, suite 200, for 13 years. It is moving a few doors down to 505 N Industrial Blvd, suite 100. Renovation work on the existing 1,360-square-foot space is expected to take no longer than a month, starting in April and wrapping up in May.

“[We’re] moving a few doors down in May to add a drive thru and more square footage to accommodate our exploding catering business,” owner David Lewis told What Now Dallas in a message.

A good reason to make a move, indeed. And the drive-thru will certainly be a welcome addition, giving guests the convenience of enjoying their cold treats without even leaving the car.

It wasn’t the summer of ’69, but the summer of ’84 that got lucky when Bob Tumolo, a former firefighter, opened a small Italian ice business on his front porch in a suburb of Philadelphia. He named his business after his wife, Rita, and served up the best-tasting, highest-quality Italian ice to those around. Today, Rita’s Italian Ice has shops in over 30 states, most of which are individually owned and operated by local community members.

One cool tradition at Rita’s is that the first day of spring is a big deal and they celebrate by giving guests a free Italian ice.

There are over 95 flavors that are rotated frequently and made fresh onsite daily. You can get Italian ice, regular or sugar free, in nearly every flavor imaginable from fruits and chocolates, candy and soda to unicorn and peanut butter and jelly. There’s also frozen custard; gelati – layers of Italian ice and custard; blendini – blended Italian ice and custard; concrete – loaded custard; misto shake – spun Italian ice and custard; frozen drinks, and milkshakes.

Frozen custard cakes, custard cookie sandwiches and custard pints are available at select locations.
